When caused by network problems, lost or dropped packets can result in highly noticeable performance issues. This is why we’ve created a new way to monitor availability & performance by measuring packet loss.

packet loss occurs when one or more packets of data traveling across a computer network fail to reach their destination. Packet loss is distinguished as one of the three main error types encountered in digital communications; the other two being bit error and spurious packets caused due to noise.

This script will allow people to put in their website to see if their server already has packet loss monitoring stats (shared hosting) or be able to add them if they want.

Packet loss data is calculated every 3 hours over a 24 hour period then archived to provide an overall status. While we don’t have any sites/providers/servers set up for monitoring at the moment, we have put in the site itself as an example (all values are fictional, to show an example). We welcome anybody to add theirs and help get the stats flowing! Simply send an e-mail to support AT webmasters-inside DOT com, with information regarding possible multiple server monitoring or any additional details you’d like to provide. Servers will be reviewed & added within 24 hours.

how is this information useful?

Sure, web hosts can claim to provide great uptime, but that doesn’t mean anything without quality. Packet loss is closely associated with quality of service considerations (QoS), and is related to the erlang unit of measure. When caused by network problems, lost or dropped packets can result in highly noticeable performance issues.
